Architectural Drawing and Design

Architectural Drawing and Design, Course DTE 8437

Architectural Drawing and Design provides the basic information necessary for planning various types of dwellings and commercial buildings so that a student can prepare a complete set of working drawings necessary to acquire a building permit and construct their design.  This is done using traditional as well as computer based methods. The course is intended to help develop in the student, the necessary technical skills to communicate architectural ideas in an understandable, efficient, and accurate manner.

Architecture, Residential Drawing and Design by Clois E. Kicklighter will be used as the textbook for the class.  It will provide the foundation for architectural concepts necessary for planning the various types of dwellings we will study.  From the textbook, we will put to paper our ideas about design and finally move to the computer to produce profession, graphic illustrations of our creative ideas.

The computer aspect of the course will start with a review of AutoDesk's  Revit software.   Students will work from sketches to create 2D and 3D images of their architectural objects.  This will require knowledge of basic house design principles as well as skills in AutoDesk’s Revit.  As their final project, students will design a house to meet a customer’s requirements, fit the house on a given plot, and create a complete walk through of the project so the customer can “see” what the completed design looks like.  These are the same skills demonstrated on various programs on the HGTV network.

Other course topics include various aspects of the construction industry including planning, finance, community issues and health, safety, and environmental issues.

This year, students will have the opportunity to acquire the software used in the classroom for free.  AutoDesk has created a student community and students can get the software for free.   I will assist the students in acquiring the software after the first week of school. After completing this course, students should be able to meet the State of Virginia competencies for Architectural Drawing and Design, Course 8437.
